Instructions

Step 1
Rinse the split peas
Step 2
Add the meaty bone along with rinsed split peas, onions, onion powder, butter, olive oil, garlic, bay leaves and thyme to a large soup pot.
Step 3
Add the water and bring it to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, with the lid slightly cracked.
Step 4
Let the soup simmer for 2.5 hours, stirring occasionally. (The longer it simmers the thicker it will get)
Step 5
Add the carrots and potatoes 40 minutes prior to serving.
Step 6
Once the carrots and potatoes are tender, remove the bone, bay leaves and thyme stems. Shred/cut the ham and add back to the soup
