Instructions

Step 1
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness.

Use a donut cutter or two different sized cookie cutters to cut out the donuts and donut holes.
Step 6
Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 375°F.

Fry the donuts a few at a time, turning once, until golden brown and cooked through, about 1-2 minutes per side.
Step 8
Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack to cool.
Step 9
Dust the cooled donuts with powdered sugar or glaze with your desired topping.
