Instructions
Step 1
In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer if you have one, place sugar and yeast then pour in water and let sit for 5 minutes to allow the yeast to activate.
Step 2
Add butter or coconut oil to the liquid, then flour and salt. and mix to form dough. Mix until all the dough is off the sides of the bowl. Remove the dough ball from the bowl and knead by hand for 5 minutes.
Step 3
Set the dough ball in a bowl and cover with a clean dish cloth for 45 minutes.
Step 4
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees while the dough rises.
Step 5
After 45 minutes, remove the dough from the bowl and place on a lightly floured surface. Knead to form a smooth ball and to eliminate large air pockets. About 2-3 minutes should do it.
Step 6
Cut the dough into 3 even pieces and roll each piece into a 14 inch log.
Step 7
Braid the 3 logs to form the loaf. Secure each end by pressing in firmly and tucking under.
Step 8
Let the braided loaf rise again for 45 minutes. The back of the cooktop of your preheated oven is a perfect spot for this.
Step 9
Meanwhile, in a small bowl, beat the egg yolk with a tablespoon of water.
Step 10
After the loaf has finished proofing, brush the top of the bread with the egg wash.
Step 11
Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Store in Ziploc to keep fresh
