Instructions
Step 1
In the bowl of your stand mixer (or just a bowl), whisk together the 1 cup of warm water, 1/3 cup granulated sugar, and 2 tablespoons of yeast. Let set for about 10 minutes or until the mixture is foamy.
Step 2
Once your mixture is foamy, add the 1/3 cup canola oil, 1 large egg and 1 teaspoon salt. Mix until incorporated and then add 4 cups of flour. Mix with a dough hook or with your hands until you form a soft, squishy dough, about five minutes. Make sure you periodically scrape the sides of the bowl to ensure thorough mixing. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
Step 3
Preheat your oven to 425°. After resting, the dough is ready to be divided and shaped. Divide your dough into 8 equally sized balls. For best results, weigh the dough and then divide that number by 8. When I make this recipe, each dough ball is roughly 4.25 oz. Shape the dough by moving it in a circular motion on your work surface and then place them on the baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, leaving a little space in between. Once all your dough balls are on your baking sheet, press them with your palm to flatten them into a circle.
Step 4
For best results brush your buns with egg wash (you can use butter or oil, but they won't be as brown). At this point, you can also add any desired toppings, like salt, sesame seeds, etc. Place your buns inside your preheated oven and bake them until golden brown on top, about 12-15 minutes. Allow them to cool on a wire rack.
