It is light yellow in color and has a neutral, very subtle nutty flavor. Regular sesame oil has a high smoke point which means it’s fantastic as a frying oil. Toasted sesame oil is made from pressed toasted sesame seeds. It has a dark amber color and a robust nutty aroma and flavor. It has a lower smoke point and is most often used as a finishing or dipping oil for flavor. Regular and toasted sesame oil can be found in the Asian section of your grocery store or at any Asian supermarket. When choosing which oil to buy, look for bottles labeled 100% pure sesame oil or else you may be buying a blended version. Take note that darker sesame oil will typically have an even stronger flavor. Sesame oil can be kept in the pantry or the fridge. It’s most important to keep it stored in a cool, dark place. In the pantry, sesame oil can last up to a year. If stored in the refrigerator, its shelf life can be extended for a few more months. It may turn slightly cloudy and thicker in the fridge but it’s still perfectly fine to enjoy!
