Instructions
Preheat Oven
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides to make it easier to remove the bars after baking.
Mix Wet Ingredients
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and paste-like.
Add Eggs and Vanilla
Step 3
Stir in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Mix until fully combined.
Combine Dry Ingredients
Step 4
Gently fold in the flour and salt until just combined. Stop mixing once you see small streaks of flour—don't overmix to avoid dense bars.
Add Mix-Ins
Step 5
Fold in the chopped dark chocolate, M&Ms, and sprinkles. Reserve a small handful of M&Ms and sprinkles for topping the bars before baking.
Bake
Step 6
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Sprinkle the reserved M&Ms and sprinkles on top. Bake for 35-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. If you prefer a gooey center, check for doneness around the 35-minute mark.
Cool and Serve
Step 7
Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, lift them out using the parchment paper overhang. Slice into squares and serve.
Brown Butter Upgrade
Step 8
If you opt to use brown butter, it adds a rich, nutty flavor to the bars. Make sure to let the brown butter cool before mixing with the sugars to prevent curdling the eggs.
Add a Pinch of Cinnamon
Step 9
A small pinch of ground cinnamon can add a delightful warmth and holiday flavor to these bars. You can also experiment with nutmeg for an extra seasonal twist.
Customizing Mix-Ins
Step 10
You can swap M&Ms for other seasonal treats like chopped candy canes, mini marshmallows, or crushed gingerbread cookies for an extra holiday flair.
Texture Variation
Step 11
If you want a crunchier texture, consider adding chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans.
