How to: Peel Chestnut

11 steps
Prep:3hCook:30min
Comes winter time, we know it is time to enjoy chestnuts. The warm sweet aroma is very nostalgic. I know sometimes the peeling process can ruin the experience so here is a way to make it easier and you end up with whole pieces. How to choose chestnuts? Well, chestnuts when fresh, they are firm and heavy. Once they get old you’ll notice the flesh has shriveled up and air pockets would form, the chestnut would feel flimsy. In Kuwait we get chestnuts from 2 countries, China and Turkey, I prefer the Turkish chestnuts flavor.

Instructions

Step 1
First, start with washing your chestnuts from any debris.
Step 2
Dry the chestnut with a towel.
Step 3
Place the chestnut on a cutting board, flat side down, belly up, and with a serrated knife make a cut.
Step 4
Turn the chestnut 90degrees and make another cut, that will create an X, and you’d appreciate it later on.
Step 5
Now place your chestnuts in a bowl and cover with filtered water and place in the fridge for 2 to 4 hours.
Step 6
After you have waited patiently, take the chestnuts out of the fridge. Drain, and dry with a towel.
Step 7
You can grill on an open flame if you are outdoor, but if you are indoor and would like to roast in the oven, here’s how.
Step 8
Preheat your oven to 170degrees celsius. Place your chestnuts on a baking tray, cook for 30 to 40 minutes.
Step 9
Once out of the oven cover the tray with a towel for up to 10minutes so the steam will be trapped and this will also make peeling easier.
Step 10
You will notice that the X you have created will pop open and this is why you would appreciate the X as it is now an entry way to all the warm goodness.
Step 11
Enjoy :)
