For the dough:
Step 1
Activate the yeast: In the bowl of your stand mixer, combine the warm or room temperature milk, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Whisk to dissolve then cover with a kitchen towel. let it sit for 5-10 mins.

Step 2
Add the melted unsalted butter, vanilla extract, and room temperature egg + egg yolk. Whisk until well combined.

Dump in the flour and salt. Knead for 10-15 mins on high speed until the dough is smooth. (Do the window pane test)

Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover with plastic film and let it rise in a warm environment for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
Step 5
Punch the gas out and divide the dough into 12 pieces. (70g) each. Form them into balls.

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Place 6 dough balls in each one. Leave some space between them.

Cover with a kitchen towel and let them proof in a warm environment for 40-60 mins until doubled in size.

In a bowl, whisk the egg and milk. Brush the rolls with the egg wash.

Bake at 350F for 20 mins until golden brown

Place the rolls onto a wire rack and allow them to cool down to room temperature.
To decorate:

Prepare the icing: in a bowl, combine the powdered sugar and the milk.

Note: if you accidentally add too much milk and it’s too runny, add more powdered sugar until desired consistency.

Note: if you don’t like the taste of icing, you can use white chocolate.

Fill a piping bag with the icing and cut off the tip.

Decorate the buns. Make sure not to add too much because it’ll spread as it sits.

Use a paper towel to pat the cherries dry. Add them on top and enjoy!
