Croque Madam

6 steps
Prep:15minCook:10min
A Croque Monsieur is a classic French hot sandwich made with ham and cheese. The name comes from the French words croque ("crunch") and monsieur ("gentleman"). The Croque Madame also is made with ham, béchamel, and Gruyère cheese but is topped with a fried egg — a "hat." The runny egg yolk adds a rich sauce to the sandwich so that bechamel can be omitted. There are references to the dish before the end of the 19th century. n the early 1900s, bistro owner Michel Lunarca popularized the croque-monsieur.

Instructions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 450F.
Step 2
Melt butter and apply a thin layer on one side of bread slices. Place them on a lined with parchment paper baking sheet, butter side up, and toast for about 3 min or until lightly golden.
Step 3
Meanwhile, melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, crack eggs, season with salt and butter, lower the heat, and cook until the whites are done. Turn off the heat.
Step 4
Take the bread out of the oven, flip the slices, and arrange the cheese and ham so the ham is between two slices of Hawarti. Arrange Gruyer on top and place the sandwiches back into the oven. Close the oven door, turn off the heat, and let the cheeses melt.
Step 5
Prepare the plates. Arrange a portion of leafy vegetables on each plate, and add a few slices of fresh tomato.
Step 6
Remove the sandwiches from the oven and serve on the plates. Bon appetite!
