Instructions
Step 1
Prepare Ingredients: Soak the dried red chilies in warm water for about 10 minutes to soften them. Drain and set aside.

Blend Ingredients: In a mortar and pestle or a food processor, combine the chopped red onions, soaked red chilies, fresh green chilies (if using), and maldive fish flakes. Pound or blend the ingredients into a coarse paste. If using a food processor, pulse to avoid over-processing.
Step 3
Add Seasonings: Add lime juice, salt, and sugar to the mixture. If using tamarind, add a small piece and mix well. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preference.
Step 4
Mix Well: Ensure all ingredients are well combined and the paste has a consistent texture.
Step 5
Serve: Serve the lunu miris as a condiment with rice, hoppers, roti, or any other Sri Lankan dish. It pairs especially well with boiled malanga roots and coconut-based curries.
