Instructions
Step 1
1. In large pan cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until well browned. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Season with sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, 2 Tbsp. parsley. Simmer, covered, for about 1.5 hours stirring occasionally.

2. In mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with egg, remaining parsley, and ½ tsp salt.

3. Preheat oven to 375 degrees

4. To assemble

* Spread 1.5 cups of meat sauce on bottom of a 9X13 baking dish.
Step 6
* Arrange noodles lengthwise over sauce
Step 7
* Spread one half of the ricotta cheese mixture over noodles
Step 8
* Top with a third of mozzarella cheese slices
Step 9
* Spoon 1.5 cup meat sauce over mozzarella and sprinkle with ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
Step 10
* Repeat layers, and top with remaining mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
Step 11
5. Cover with foil (spray foil with cooking spray to prevent sticking).
Step 12
6. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake and additional 25 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes before serving.
