This is a classic Grandmother Armstrong recipe. Legend has it she was at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and asked for this recipe. It came in the mail along with a bill. No one seems to know how much, but we all believe she paid it.

Ingredients

Cake
1 cupbutter
or part margarine
1 ½ cupssugar
2eggs
1 tablespoonred food coloring
1 tablespoonwater
1 cupbuttermilk
2 ½ cupscake flour
sifted
1 teaspoonbaking soda
¾ teaspoonsalt
2 heaping teaspoonscocoa
1 teaspoonvanilla
1 tablespoonvinegar

Step 1
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs; beat well. Add food coloring and water. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla and vinegar. Makes 2- 9” layers or 3- 7” or 8” layers. Bake on the center oven rack at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes or until it shrinks from the sides and is firm.
Icing
Step 2
As soon as the cake is in the oven, cook flour and milk over low heat, stirring constantly until thick. Cool, then place in refrigerator until cold.
Step 3
When cake is cool and ready to be iced, cream together butter and sugar. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla, then flour and refrigerated mixture. Beat with mixer until very fluffy. Ice between layers, top and sides. Decorate with maraschino cherries and nuts, if desired.
