CHOCOLATE CUSTARD
8 steps
Prep:10minCook:15min
This Chocolate Custard might bring back a few childhood memories, especially if it’s served over a warm chocolate sponge! We love our custard to be nice and thick, but if you prefer a thinner custard, simply add one tablespoon of cornflour instead of two. Serve with our Choco Nut Lava Cakes (here), Apple Brown Betty (here), Banana Sponge Puddings (here), Treacle Sponge (here), Jam Roly Poly (here) or Coconut and Jam Sponge (here) for a truly decadent dessert that you’d never believe is slimming friendly!

Instructions
Step 1
Put the egg yolks, cornflour, cocoa powder and sweetener in a large heatproof jug. Add 2 tablespoons of the milk and stir to form a smooth paste.
Step 2
Pour the remaining milk into a medium saucepan and place over a medium heat. Heat until steaming hot, taking care not to let it burn or boil over.
Step 3
Gradually pour the steaming hot milk into the mixture in the jug, stirring with a wooden spoon or whisking with a balloon whisk until completely blended.
Step 4
Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and place over a medium heat. Cook the custard, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or balloon whisk, for about 5 minutes, until there are a few small bubbles starting to appear on the surface and the custard is starting to thicken.
Step 5
As soon as the custard has thickened, remove it from the heat. Don’t let the custard overheat or boil otherwise it may burn or split.
Step 6
Pour into a clean heatproof jug and serve with a dessert of your choice.
Step 7
TIP: If you wish to cut down on calories further, you could use skimmed milk instead of semi-skimmed, and adjust the calories accordingly.
Step 8
SWAP THIS: You can use skimmed or non-dairy milk if you prefer.
