Instructions
Step 1
Heat oven to 325 degrees for gas or convection or 350 degrees for electric
Step 2
Place bread in milk and set aside to soak
Step 3
Meanwhile, heat oil or butter in a skillet or a saucepan over medium high heat.
Step 4
Once butter or oil is hot, add onions and turn down to medium heat and sauté stirring regularly for 10 mins until they are soft and starting to color.
Step 5
Vegetarian option: add vegetables in step 4 in place of ground beef
Step 6
Add the garlic and beef and stir well, crushing the ground beef into a fine mince and starts to turn light brown. Do not overcook. Beef will continue to cook once placed in the oven.

Vegetarian option: add lentil in with garlic

Turn heat down to low. Stir in the curry paste, herbs, chutney, raisins and 2 of the bay leaves with 1 tsp salt and ground black pepper to taste.
Step 9
Cover and on low simmer for 10 mins.
Step 10
Squeeze the milk from the bread. Break the break into smaller pieces and add to the meat mixture until well blended.
Step 11
Pour the meat mixture into 9 by 12 oven proof dish.
Step 12
Press the mixture down well and smooth the top.
Step 13
For the topping, beat the milk and eggs with clove and allspice, pour over the meat.
Step 14
Top with the remaining bay leaves and bake for 35-40 mins until the topping is set and starting to turn golden.

Serve with steamed vegetables, South African yellow Rice or a salad
