Instructions

Step 1
In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, ground ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
Step 2
In large bowl of electric mixer, add shortening and brown sugar. Beat on medium speed until light and fluffy, 3-4 minutes.

Step 3
Add in the molasses and egg and beat until well incorporated.
Step 4
Add the flour mixture by scoopfuls and beat until combined. Refrigerate at least 1 hour.
Step 5
Preheat the oven to 375 º F. Add the turbinado sugar to a small plate or bowl. Roll the dough into balls that are 1 ¼ inch in diameter, then dip tops in the sugar. Place sugar side up on baking sheet, 3 inches apart.
Step 6
Sprinkle each cookie with 2-3 drops of water.
Step 7
Bake the cookies 10 - 12 minutes. Cool on wire racks.
